What is a Website Domain Name?
A website domain name refers to the website URL (Uniform Resource Locator) or your website address. For example: wikipedia.org or kiwiwebworks.com.
Your website domain name is unique. Noone else can have exactly the same domain name as you. It is the unique identifier of your website.
Website domain names are normally pre–fixed by "www". Other letters may be used to differentiate websites on the same domain. Such as "dev.website.com" to denote a development website.
Website domain names are generally seperated by country and type using a two or three digit suffix. These suffixes are preset, and are limited.
Some example country suffixes include:
- .nz - New Zealand
- .au - Australia
- .uk - United Kingdom
- .fr - France
The most popular domain extension is currently .com. Other examples of types of domains include:
- .govt - Government
- .edu - Education
- .org - Organisations
- .ac - Education
If you have a website domain name you can usually attach one or several email addresses to the domain. For example, for the website domain name kiwiwebworks.com I can have the email address info@kiwiwebworks.com.
